What a roof does for a party
A roof suits a standing party. Guests hold a drink, eat food they can manage with one hand, and move between the bar and the edge. It also suits a client evening, because the view gives people something to talk about. Of the 61 spaces here, 23 take 100 guests or fewer and 14 take more than 300.
Small roofs for one team
Princes Dome at The Ned (50) has an outdoor terrace and its own bar, near Bank. In Shoreditch, Laurel's On The Roof takes up to 100 around a rooftop pool. The Penthouse at AllBright Mayfair (60) has two terraces on the fifth floor. The Derby Rooftop (60) looks over King's Cross, and Sloane Club Roof Terrace (100) sits just off the King's Road.
Roofs for a few hundred
Smiths of Smithfield takes up to 200. For bigger numbers, Savage Garden near Tower Hill holds 350, Big Chill King's Cross 450 and Bar Elba at Waterloo 600. Madison Roof Terrace faces St Paul's and takes up to 700. Sky Garden is the largest on this page, at 750.
Wind, rain and finish times
Wind is stronger at height, so skip loose décor and ask where guests can shelter. Check what cover there is if it rains. London Bridge Rooftop (240) is fully covered and has heaters. The Glass Box at Aviary (50) is a room with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the terrace. Outdoor areas on a roof often close earlier than the rooms inside, usually because of neighbours. Ask what time the terrace itself shuts and where your guests go after that.
