A room with an outside

A terrace lets guests drink outside while it is warm and move in when the light fades or the rain comes. For a mixed group that choice keeps everyone comfortable. It also means you rarely need a separate wet-weather plan.

Small terraces

Of the 74, 25 take 100 guests or fewer. Vagabond Shoreditch (65) is a wine bar with a heated roof terrace near Brick Lane. The conservatory at The Alwyne Castle (80) has a private entrance and its own garden terrace. The Ned takes 70, and The Garden Terrace at The Hari 30.

Larger terraces

The Terrace at Doggett's Coat and Badge (120) looks across to St Paul's and the City. Tanner Warehouse (450) is a converted warehouse on Bermondsey Street. Spencer House (450) is a St James's house with neoclassical interiors. ZSL London Zoo takes 700 and Site 5 in Shadwell 800 across two tiers. King's Cross, Camden and Islington has nine terraces, such as The Lucky Club Camden (150).

Heating, cover and sharing

Ask whether the terrace has heaters or a roof. Backyard at The Light Bar (100) is heated and covered, and The Hari's terrace has a retractable roof. Ask too whether you have the terrace to yourselves or share it with the bar's other guests. Our guide to shared or exclusive hire explains the difference. Terraces near homes can have an earlier finish than the room inside, so check both times.
