Why hold it outside
An outdoor party feels nothing like an evening in the office or a bar. Guests can spread out, the light lasts into the evening, and a garden or roof gives the night a sense of occasion. The catch is the weather, so every outdoor booking needs a plan for rain.
Pick the setting first
Rooftops give you a view and suit drinks and bowl food. They run from Princes Dome at The Ned (50) to Madison Roof Terrace (700). Terraces sit next to a room you can retreat to, like The Terrace at Doggett's Coat and Badge (120) on the South Bank. Gardens and courtyards range from party venues such as Lost In Brixton (600) to Lancaster House (350), close to Buckingham Palace. Marquee venues take the biggest numbers.
By size
Of the 185 spaces, 57 take 100 guests or fewer. Backyard at The Light Bar in Shoreditch (100) and BiBo Courtyard at Mondrian Shoreditch (40) are two of them. A further 66 take up to 300 and 50 take up to 800. Eleven go above 800. Those include London Summer House on the South Bank (2,000), and Regents College, Westminster Abbey and Vinegar Yard at 1,000 each.
Plan for rain
Ask each venue what happens if it rains. Some have cover built in. Beach at Brixton Jamm (250) has a fully retractable roof and heated booths. City Summer House (600) pairs a private garden with an indoor warehouse space. Elsewhere you may need umbrellas, a marquee or a room held back indoors.
