What works for 100 to 200 guests
This is the size where exclusive hire becomes realistic in many bars, restaurants and smaller venues. A roof terrace can be yours alone, and so can a courtyard, a garden or a moored boat. Smiths of Smithfield near Farringdon takes up to 200, and St Paul's Roof Terrace up to 180 at penthouse level. In Bermondsey, Tanner Warehouse is a converted warehouse with its own bar and kitchen for up to 450.
Rooftops and views
London Bridge Rooftop (240) is fully covered, with heaters and DJs, a short walk from The Shard. Savage Garden (350) has a south terrace facing Tower Bridge. In Shoreditch, the Penthouse Palm Terrace at Aviary takes up to 120 and comes with indoor rooms alongside. Browse venues with a view for more.
Gardens, halls and the river
Lancaster House (350), close to Buckingham Palace, is a historic house with gardens. Lincoln's Inn East Terrace (450) opens its gardens and terraces near Chancery Lane. God's Garden at One Marylebone takes up to 200, and RIBA (400) sits between Oxford Street and Regent's Park. For something on the water, the Dutchmaster (375) is set up for DJs, live bands or seated dinners. In Fulham, Neverland Beach (500) has a sandy beach beside the Thames.
Standing or seated
At 100 to 200, the format changes the shortlist. A terrace that takes 200 standing may seat far fewer, so tell us early if you want a dinner. Also ask where the party moves if it rains. Some terraces are covered or heated and others are not. Budgets are covered in the costs guide.
